Later, the NZFS built the fourth Frew Hut next to this one, with both huts being removed in 2003, when DOC built a new 'Frew Hut' (No. 5) up river at the Frew Creek confluence. The name Mathias Junction Hut came from the location of the hut at the junction of where the old track from Mathias Pass (Dobson track) met the Whitcombe valley track.
